Becoming an effective Manager

Management encompasses a variety of things. The first two post of this page looked at some of the important aspects of organization and management in the 21st century, which included globalization, technology, sustainability and corporate social responsibility just to mention a few. While considering these trends, the page further identified the one aspect of management and organization and thus communication, through insights from Elizabeth smith, we gathered information on the importance of communication in organizations. Today however we look at leadership as another concept in management.

Viewed as one of the major factors in management, Dwight D. Eisenhower defines leadership, as the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it, looking at the definition you will recognize that there is a “YOU” meaning the Manager and “SOMEONE” meaning the people or team the Manager works with. It is therefore the goal of all organizations to achieve effective leadership through mangers efforts to;


Lead by example


Disciplined and committed managers will create effective teams and results because everyone working with them will follow their footsteps. Effective managers, through their efforts and motivation set perfect examples to their subordinates and thus boosting performance.

Setting Clear Goals

While organization goals vary from those that are already determined and those that are to be achieved through consultations within and outside the organization, managers exist to initiate and sometimes guide their teams in siting and understanding what they ought to do, the standards and performance needed to achieve organization goals.


Communication


Citing the importance of communication in the previous post, it is inevitable to suggest that effective managers are good communicators. A managers that are open to disseminate information to their teams about the organizations issues always yield good results because even there teams will lead by his/her standards and thus provide them with available issues affecting the organization lower sectors. It is important to note that lack communication and information dissemination will generate suspicion and lack of trust within organizations.

NB: The JOHARI Window in communication has been one of those examples that has explained the quadrants of why people will always need communication with others to know there weak and strong spots and thus achieve their goals in life or within organisations.


Delegation


Just like organisations outsource some of its activities, as effective Managers, delegation of authority and responsibilities to team structures realistically and with consideration of the advantageous success that emanate from collectiveness. Further, an effective manager through the delegation will boost teamwork within the organisation that will accomplish coordination and perfect communication.
